Resident 2001 - 2002

3/4/2002
I have been very pleased with my actual apartment. The appliances are great and everything is very attractive. The gym is pretty good, but the pool is small. They claim they are building an Olympic size pool, but I believe it´s a lie. It´s nice being able to park in the garage and only have to walk a few feet to your apartment. The walls and ceilings are thick enough that you almost never hear your neighbors.

You´re about a 5 minute drive from anywhere, which is great.

The problem is that Avalon chose to build in a terrible neighborhood. I have heard of a Avalon town house window being shot out and a person being shot walking down the street in the last couple of weeks. Not a place you want to walk your dog late at night. Avalon will not tell you about all the crime in the area. There are new buildings being built, and there appears to be squatters living in them. They tore down one of the worst projects in the state to put up Avalon, but there are still other projects around it. Avalon also hosts rent controlled housing, low income housing, meaning that there are occasionally unsavory people using the common areas.

Avalon claims "free transportation to the Metro," which means you can take the Metro bus for free. They told everyone who moved in in 2001 that they would have a shuttle, which was a lie. The bus is ok, except for the fact that you ride with the same element that makes it an unsafe neighborhood.

For the price, I´d expect to feel safer.
