Resident 2010 - 2013

4/5/2013

Two recent break-ins have made me feel unsafe living here. I was glad to move out! The Whitmore is a decent apartment complex located in a slightly cheaper area. The units are decent, although a majority of the fixtures and other updates are very cheap and break often. The AC/Heat is centrally controlled. Usually it is not a big problem although our particular AC unit kept breaking and the management office did not seem to understand that the AC was not working correctly when it was 83-85 degrees inside the apartment with the AC unit running 24/7. The size of the units are great--my wife and I had enough space with 2 big closets for clothes. The larger than average size kitchen is also a bonus. The tiny bathroom with a cheap toilet, towel rack, shower curtain rack, etc was definitely not a bonus but served its purpose. The units also have a problem with mold, so would not recommend this place for people with allergies or asthma. The building is very pet friendly, although paradoxically there are a few tenants who are afraid of dogs. You do have to pay pent rent every month and a non-refundable fee for having a pet, but it is a reasonable amount. There was a big problem with a few dog owners not cleaning up after their pets outside, especially a year or two ago, and I see that mentioned in some of the reviews. This problem no longer exists, as the current tenants are doing a good job of picking up after their pets (at least in the back, where I take my dog). Of course, this is 100% dependent on new tenants continuing the good habit. The utilities are not too expensive, although I am not personally a fan of the pooled electric and gas bills that are not individually metered but split among the tenants based on square footage of your unit. If you are conscientious and careful about lighting and gas use you will be annoyed by the younger/lazy folks in the building who end up running up the bill that you then have to pay. Because of this, I would recommend the slightly smaller units to save a bit of cash. The apartment complex is only 7 floors, but somehow at least one of the 2 elevators is always broken. The concierge staff is a wash--2 of them are very nice and friendly; 2 are very callous, mean, and will curse at you if you dare to ask to pick up a package during their "breaks." The management staff is ok, although I really miss the folks who were managing the building when my wife and I first moved into the unit. Dealing with rent and requesting maintenance is easy with the online website. Lastly, if you need to break your lease for any reason get ready for hefty fees--they really try and take every nickel they can out of your pockets when you leave, so be prepared to bleed some cash. Overall, The Whitmore attempts to deliver quality apartment living for a little bit less than a luxury apartment will cost you. In my opinion they succeed, although the flaws in the management, apartment updates, and business model will potentially irritate you in the end.
