Resident 2005 - 2008

4/17/2008

I lived here all three years of law school. I think the negatives are largely overrated. My quick overview: Convenient location. Parking at the law school sucks if you don't get a permit. Jeffersonian is within a 2-3 minute walk of the law school. Its closer than some of the parking lots. At the bottom of the hill is a very large shopping center with almost everything you'll need - two banks, two grocery stores, two barber shops, a bookstore, clothes stores, restaurants, a CVS, Kinkos, etc. You're within five minutes of Darden and the North Grounds gym, and its probably a 10 minute walk to the JPJ Arena. Parking - I've never had a problem with resident parking. At worst, you have to park behind the building, its an extra 15 seconds to walk it. Guests have to park on Arlington Blvd., and should try to get their spot when the law school is out of session, as that's where law students without a permit target. That does get messy, sometimes. Bugs - never seen anything but the occasional fly. Utilities - they cover water, you cover heating it. My bills usually range from $50 - 110 a month (low end is in the top of the building during winter - heat rises!) TV - if you like TV, you need cable, because there's nothing over the air. Maybe its just my TV, though. Internet - they provide wireless internet. Its fast for most common things. If you have large downloads or you want to watch streaming video (I like MLB.TV) it can be bumpy, especially in the early evening when everyone's getting on after school. Maintainence / Landlord - I've never had a problem with either - but I've only needed to call maintainence like twice. Kathy is fine in my book - she was really helpful when I needed to juggle apartments because my roommate left. I'm not sure who she bugs - I don't think I saw her except in passing between signing my second lease and when she came up to show my apartment two years later. I have heard they're slow with getting security deposits, but I don't have any first hand knowledge. Noise - occasionally you get softball games or the marching band, but those are at decent hours. I only occasionally hear my neighbors, usually just the thud when they drop something heavy. The parties tend to be at Ivy Gardens, which is close enough to walk to but far away enough not to hear. Pets - I believe the rule is you can have dogs and cats (but not puppies or kittens). They may need a pet interview or have breed restrictions, I'm not sure. It increases your security deposit and there's pet rent. There's a laundry room on site, a dollar to wash and another to dry. Change machine there.
