Resident 2003

3/31/2004

I moved into the apartment building March 2003. I was happy because of the location. The apartment they showed me was clean and nice, but when I went to put my deposit down they had rented that apartment so I was given another. I was sure it was the same type of apartment so I didnt mind.

After moving in, I would say a month or 1 1/2 months later a spot on the ceiling in the bathroom above the shower started to leak. I called maintenance NUMEROUS TIMES ABOUT IT. I wont get into to detail, but lets just say it was not fixed until like September and this was after I had to call Fairfax County Department of Consumer Affairs and the Health Department. I had the Health Department come and look at it, it was gross. By this time, a hole big enough for me to stick my fist in had appeared. Maintenance had used ancient tactics to ´fix´ it, like putting a fish net up there--Um, not going to work. Green mold had started to form. I couldnt really take a shower without watching the hole and making sure that none of the water that dripped from it touched me. I could not take soak baths in my own bath tub, and I was horrified to let my then 1yr old son take a shower/bath.

There were many other things wrong with the apartment building. When I first moved in, the first night of living there, I noticed a roach, I was disgusted. I am afraid of bugs, but I made a concoction of baking soda and sugar, something I learned from an Oprah Winfrey Show and sprinkled it in cracks, and above the cabinets and I didnt see any for a LONG TIME. But then, come August/September, the dang things came back, and when I say with a vengence, I MEAN WITH A VENGENCE. I hated to go home. I had to literally SHAKE MY CLOTHES before putting them on each morning and my shoes. I was afraid to take my school bag and purse places in fear that a roach would come out. That is terrible. No one should have to live like that. I believe the maintenance, offic could exterminate more effectively, it is their duty. I spoke with the Health Department, and that is a violation in Fairfax County. Roaches bring a lot of different health problems with them as well. It is especially bad for children, they develop allergies, asthma, etc.

The air conditioner leaked and it took the office/maintenance A LONG time to fix it. The spot on the floor which was about 2feet in diameter (probably coolant) was there for a while, I was afraid that it would mold so I blocked the area off so that my son could not go over there. Then the air conditioner in the apartment above me leaked, and it started to appear in the ceiling, they never really fixed that. They would just come and wipe the ceiling down with a cloth and tell me that they fixed it, I am an educated woman, I am not stupid, dont play with me.

Because of the leaking air conditioners, I am assuming that they leaked through the walls because I foudn MOLD disgusting MOLD growing THROUGH MY WALL IN THE bedroom. By this time, I had had enough. I collected information from many different organizations and county departments and put in to have my lease terminated. The apartment (managers) would not cooperate so they would not agree to terminate without penalty. But I said to myself, oh well, and I terminated it myself. Penalty or no penalty.

The staff at the apartment building are rude, ignorant, and inexperienced. They need customer service training. They ignore you, and if you are like me and have some sense and go to the higher offices to complain, they try to make your stay miserable. There are many other problems I had with them, but there is too much to write so I wont.

All I have to say is, in any situation, in any apartment building, dont just take it, nonsense. Stick up for yourself and your family. You have rights as a tenant that they dont want you to know. Dont pay for garbage. I only stayed at the apartment for 8 months.
