I visited Oakbrook and put down $265 to reserve an apartment. I was told that the $264 was for an "upfront fee" and that $125 was refundable. After a month, I decided I would withdraw my application and singed a lease elsewhere. I called Oakbrook to let them know and the rental agent again said that $125 would be refunded in 30-40 days. She also asked if my check had already been deposited and I told her it had been. She told me I needed to write a letter of withdrawal, so I went to get a pen to write down the email. When I returned to the phone, she told me that she had made a mistake and that I would not be refunded because my withdrawal was beyond their 48 hour time limit. This is the first I heard of the time limit. She said I signed papers regarding this. I am searching for my papers. However, in all my notes taken from talking to them, I see nothing about a 48 hour time limit to withdraw your application. They still have over a month to find a tenant for that apartment. It seems the ethical thing to do would be to refund $125 of the $265, just as they said they would do. This experience causes me to feel grateful that I did not choose Oakbrook as my home. P.S. The items I rated as 3 are because I did not live there and do not have a rating either way.
