Resident ā€¢ 2006 - 2007

5/8/2007

I will tell you all the good and bad you need to know about Ashby.
1. It is the party complex of JMU. This can be good or bad depending on your personality. From Thursday on through the rest of the weekend there will be parties going on everywhere. If you are into parting all the time this is the place for you. If not know that the parties and noise and stupid drunk people will be inescapable. Also even if you are trying to get together with just a few friends, random people will just walk into your apartment and try to party with you.
2. The apartments themselves are not bad. The furniture and beds are uncomfortable but decent. The overall cleanliness is average. They are good about fixing stuff quickly.
3. The water heater and heat in the apartment are gas operated. This equals a whole lot of money every month. Even in warm months the gas bill was atleast $65.00 up too $110 in colder months and then you have the electric bill to pay too, which averages around $75.00 a month but also can top $100.
4. The apartment complex itself is not bad, its mostly the other residents that will make you hate your life. People will set their trash outside their door for a week or two, throw cigarette butts everywhere, and throw massive parties and never clean up after them.
5. Random Roomates = Bad Idea!! I got stuck with a pot head who smoked it up every day, and an idiot who likes to shoot his paintball gun inside. The third roomate was ok. None of them ever cleaned up behind themselves. Be advised also that you sign individual leases for each bedroom, however you are liable for 1/4 of damages in common areas. If something is broken and nobody admits to it, you will be stuck paying for 1/4 of it. This can be a problem if like me, you get stuck with idiots who have never lived indoors before.
6. Parking. For residents it is not that bad. However there is no visitor parking at all. You can get a visitor pass for $1 good for a week, but you have to get them early in the week because they only sell so many per week. They will tow anyone without a permit or visitor pass. There is a truck dedicated to Ashby parking and he is there all night long. You will get towed without one and it will cost you about $200 to get your car back. This really makes having friends over difficult. Also nobody parks in the lines. Most college students are self centered and inconsiderate. This applies to all aspects of life in Ashby and at JMU, so get used to the idea now.
7. Other facilites. The pool is hardly ever open. The clubhouse has posted hours, but don't be surprised if you go down there and they're closed. They just pick a time and leave for the day, always earlier than its supposed to be. The office and repair staff are actually pretty good, so thats one positive thing to be said.
8. Fines. Ashby is big on fines for stuff that they can't even prove that you did. Know this now: they will try and get as much money out of you as possible.

Overall my experience was very negative, but that had alot to do with my roommates. Also the trash and overall attitudes of the other residents made it really suck. The apartments could be a whole lot nicer if the people living there acted like real humans, and not like stupid college students. If you like to party alot, and like having your place trashed all the time, this is the place for you. If you want to live like a normal person, and go party and trash some other place, then Ashby is not for you. If I think of anything else I'll add it later.
