We hadn't even moved in before things started to get quirky. First, they signed us to a 13 month lease, and wouldn't let us sign a 12 month lease saying that it's "standard for apartment leasing". Next, the apartment manager toured our apartment with us saying, "these stained carpets are scheduled to be replaced next year, so don't worry about what happens to them." Having small children, things are guaranteed to happen to a carpet, so I was relieved to hear this. She said the same about the outdated appliances, that our building was scheduled for a remodel, and that these appliances were being replaced the following year. We were surprised to be notified after we left that we were not getting our deposit back and were being charged an extra $500 in repairs for the replacement of the carpet and repair of the fridge and stove. Other than some minor scrapes on the wall, there was no problem with the apartment, and the manager did not show up to the appointment we set to go through the apartment together. We had rotting wood on our exterior that eventually became a gaping hole. This caused water to get into our storage closet and ruined most of what we stored in there. When we noticed the hole two months prior and notified the manager, she said that they would promptly attend to it. I reminded her every time we paid the rent, and it still wasn't repaired when we moved out. It seems that we were the only tenants that did understand the dangers of having a barbecue grill on our patio or balcony, because every one else had one. Getting out of this apartment every day for work was a nightmare, as there is only one exit and no light to direct traffic. The apartments were expensive, even for Hanover County, and the "great Hanover schools" they advertise are on the other side of the county pulling from districts Mill Trace doesn't fall in. There always seemed to be police attending to matters in the front two buildings, something I found a little unsettling. More than once, I returned home to find my doors unlocked when no service was scheduled. My family and I couldn't wait to leave here, save money, and rent a house with almost twice as much room!
