Resident 2012 - 2013

2/22/2013

This place is very attractive to look at, but there are serious problems that cannot be overlooked. One feature that was advertised to my roommate and I in promotional materials was the "high ceilings", which we unfortunately did not pay attention to. It would seem this also means "thin, non-insulated ceilings". Something about the design of the apartment amplifies what seems to be EVERY noise coming from suites above. On multiple occasions, my roommate and I have gone upstairs in a fury, only to find upon getting there that the tenants really were not doing anything other than walking around. Understand that this sounds for all the world like a couple of -------s stomping to and fro above you, and this happens ALL THE TIME. I shudder to think what I put the tenants below me through... Security is also seriously amiss. While I immediately clarify that I am unaware of any break-ins as a consequence of management's poor arrangements, this is solely due to a lack of effort from criminals outside. The garage is gated in, but very often one of the gates stays open for extended periods of time, allowing someone who is willing to wait long enough a guaranteed way into the garage. There is another profound security flaw that I am not comfortable posting here, so I have flagged this review to come with an alternate email I rarely use - if you want to know what the flaw is, please email me there. My final serious complaint about this suite is the appliances. In the half-year my roommate and I have been here, we have experienced failure of our stove, garbage disposal, washing machine, washer AND dryer, and several outlets. The stove actually broke very soon after move-in, while the other appliances took longer. I have not lived in enough apartment complexes to know if this is a common issue, so you'll need to work that out for yourself. This place is not without redeeming features. You would be hard-pressed to find a visually appealing, spacious apartment better priced than these in Norfolk. The lounge and gym are both excellent (although the latter is small), and the pool was quite pleasant in the summer. Other reviews mention a foul odor and frequent encounters with dogshit - these are both very rare, and I would not place much stock in them. Undoubtedly the BEST part of living here however, besides the cost-efficiency, is the management staff, who are always quick with a smile and respond very quickly to (unfortunately commonplace) maintenance requests. They also host multiple socials, especially wine-and-cheese soirees. Unfortunately, aside from the low price, my roommate and I find these "perks" completely inadequate to offset the issues I've already detailed, and for that reason, I cannot recommend The Alexander to anyone without extremely high tolerance to noise. Contact me with any questions - I will answer them as quickly as I can. DrLight11@aol.com
