Resident 2015 - 2017

2/18/2017

My husband and I moved in to a two bedroom apartment on May 2015 and will be moving this May (2017). The first year we lived here wasn't too bad. No major issues except for the insulation of the apartment. We had the option of choosing between two apartments, one had a high ceiling with large windows in the master, and the other had a lower ceiling with smaller windows. We chose the high ceiling and large windows in our master, but we quickly figured out that was a mistake. Because of the large widows the bedroom was boiling hot during the summer and freezing cold during the winter. The temperature was so extreme we opted to move our stuff into the guest bedroom and stay there, even though it didn't have the en suite bathroom. All of the windows in the apartment need to be replaced. They are very poorly insulated and the temperature in the apartment is determined by the weather outside. During the winter we are constantly having to run a small space heater or have a fire in the fireplace to keep the apartment warm. (On the plus side, there is a fire place!! I loved that about this apartment!) The front door to our apartment however, has large gaps in it, so much that we can see lights from outside while the door is closed. The second year we were here was a little different. We had major plumbing problems. On two different occasions we had dripping pipes in our utility closet that were fixed haphazardly so that later on the issue came back even worse. At one point there was a large stream of water coming out of the closet soaking the carpet and flooding the kitchen. By the time an emergency maintenance person came there were 2 inches of water in the kitchen. After fixing the problem and being without hot water for way too long, they needed to dry out the carpet that was soaked and rather than replacing the carpet and the padding underneath, they simply dried it out on the balcony and put it back. I'm sure there will be mold growing there in no time. While on the topic of mold, I'd like to mention the bathroom is covered in it. On many occasions I have gotten mold cleaner and cleaned the ceiling and shower walls, but it constantly comes back from the peeling and soaked wood near the shower. Also, for the past year we've had barely enough hot water for one 8 minute shower at a time. If we both wanted to shower within 10 minutes of each other, the second person going would have luke warm water at best. When complaining about this the maintenance people would come and "fix" it, with the problem returning the next day. As for noise, it isn't too bad. We have had some great neighbors and haven't had many issues with noise other than when residents are walking their dogs and they are barking constantly while being outside. The kitchen is functional. All the appliances are super old and outdated, including the dishwasher which barely gets dishes clean. There is also very very very little cabinet space. A total of 4 full size upper cabinets, and 3 half (or less than half) small cabinets. There is such little cabinet space that we had to go and buy a large standing cabinet from Lowe's to hold our extra food and kitchen appliances. The maintenance staff is always really nice and the clubhouse employees are also really nice, but it seems the issues going on are way more complicated than what they're trained for. I really enjoy the pool during the summer and staff are constantly checking resident passes so non-resisdents can't come and use the pool for free, but often residents bring their children and don't monitor them while they are swimming. So, they become very noisy, and are constantly splashing and horsing around. As for the gym, it is sub par. The treadmills are rarely working, and often the wet wipes to wipe down the equipment before and after are dried out or used up. The grounds are almost always well kept, except on trash days where residents are told to put their garbage on the curbs outside their apartments, which often results in animals getting into the bags and spreading trash everywhere. Also, there have been several instances where I have stepped in dog poop while walking in the grass outside the apartments. Residents are supposed to clean up after their pets when taking them out, but this is not enforced at all, which is really gross. Overall, I didn't mind living here the first year, but the issues outweighed the positive during the second year.
