Resident 2011 - 2014

9/18/2014

A few of the things I have learned while living at Steeplechase: The plumbing is substandard and I have experienced two flood disasters already. The second one included a ceiling collapse, destruction of some personal property, and resulted in the apartment being unlivable for at least half of the month that I was still required to pay full rent. (I was on my own too as far as finding accommodations, but my renters insurance reimbursed me for the hotel at least.) The construction is shoddy, soundproofing and insulation pretty much nonexistent, and mold and mildew tend to be an issue. (The poor insulation and draftiness were very apparent when my heat was broken for several days this past winter.) The ceiling creaks worse than in any previous building I've been in when my upstairs neighbors walk/move in their living room. The cabinets, fixtures, etc. are of very low quality for a place with such high rent. Apparently smoking is allowed on the premises, though the thin porous walls are not able to contain cigarette smoke. I'm now suffering from the insidious cigarette smoke that is finding its way into my apartment from my new smoker neighbors, which I seem to be allergic to. In fairness, the maintenance guys have been very good about doing the best they can with the resources they're given. All in all, a run down, overpriced, poorly constructed apartment complex with nice landscaping. The new ownership has invested in some plumbing upgrades (since apparently my plumbing disasters were only two among many in the complex), painting the buildings, and upgrading the fitness room. And I gather that they are investing in upgrading the individual apartments with new appliances, carpeting, etc. as residents turn over. But the shoddy construction really is a fundamental flaw - a natural result of the profit-driven construction business making the most of lax building codes I guess. But then if you're gonna charge luxury apartment rents....hard to justify, especially when there are newer, better built apartments in town. You can put lipstick on a pig, but in the end it's still a pig!
