Resident 2009 - 2011

8/14/2012

I lived at Golden Place for two years and would have stayed longer if I had a reason to stay in Burlington. The management was always helpful and courteous. I really appreciated that the specific fines that would be associated with any type of damage were clearly delineated in my security deposit agreement before I moved in. I knew exactly what charge I would incur for anything that was wrong at move-out, and I actually got most of my deposit back (which I've heard is a rarity, and has been in my personal experience). My apartment was large, with a lot of natural light. I consider myself very lucky to have found such an affordable place in an expensive town. Rent ($800 before utilities, $10/month pet fee for one cat) was very reasonable for a large, fairly well-maintained place in a great location only a fifteen minute walk into town, very close to the lake and parks, and only a block from Bite Me pizzeria. As I paid rent on a two-bedroom apartment, I think it would have been fair if I were allotted two parking permits, but other than that I don't have complaints about the parking situation. It was always easy for me to find a spot in the lot and my guests didn't have trouble parking on St. Paul Street. One of my friends got his car towed from the lot, but the lease does clearly state that that will happen if you don't have a parking sticker, so I can't say I wasn't expecting it. I could hear the neighbors through walls/ceiling from time to time, but that isn't the landlords' issue. It is a college town, and lots of students rent here; there are bound to be parties and noise occasionally in any multi-unit building. As a single woman in my mid-20s, I (almost - see last paragraph) always felt safe in my building and in the neighborhood. I don't understand any tenants with complaints about the management. Derek (the owner's son) gives out his cell phone number and takes calls at any time and deals with most issues quickly. There were a few minor repairs I requested upon move-in (missing screen in one of the windows, broken shelf in the fridge) that still hadn't been fixed when it came time to renew my lease, but I requested in writing that they be taken care of before I signed a new lease and they were. As far as complaints go, the apartment did tend to stay damp in the summer months and developed a definite moldy, mildewy smell that would have concerned me in the long term. My apartment was also on the ground floor, next to a storage area, and in the last months that I lived there (though this had nothing to do with my moving out) some people started doing something mysterious and creepy in the middle of the night outside my bedroom window. I have no idea what they were doing, and I didn't want to know, but it was unusual and disturbing considering how safe the development had always felt previously. Lastly, the washing machine REPEATEDLY ate my change, which creates the huge hassle of needing to unload all that laundry and trek all over the development looking for another open machine - plus, that's $1.50 lost in quarters each time! Overall, however, I highly recommend Golden Place.
