Resident 1998 - 2011

3/6/2011

I've lived in Cedar Heights for years and watched it's gradual decline, and have been considering writing a review for a few weeks now so that no one gets locked into a lease in a community they will not like. One of the first amenities I am sure are offered when management speaks with potential tenants is the fact that there are two pools. Yes, this is true. However, what I am sure they will fail to inform you of is this: one is almost never open when it is, there is no heat in it and the other is "closed for maintenance" for weeks at a time. Two summers ago, when it was up in the 100's for a few weeks, the pool was closed and, again, "closed for maintenance" yet there was no maintenance being done to the pool. That entire week when it was over 100 degrees, the pool remained closed. Rumor has it that there was some regulations that the complex had failed to comply with but, come on, you have all winter to get those kinds of things fixed. There used to be a hot tub, but evidently that was too difficult to maintain and it was removed. An indication they really do not care for their tenants was that, generally a pool is to open by Memorial Day weekend and close after Labor Day weekend... Both this past summer, and the summer before, they have NOT opened the pool by Memorial Day weekend but ensure it is closed promptly Labor Day weekend. Personally I think if you are going to open a pool later, you should keep it open later as well. The on-site workout facility I'm sure is another amenity that is mentioned to future tenants. Being that I am not a hardcore workout buff (mostly just cardio) the only real complaint I have is the hours. I don't remember the hours off-hand, but they vary throughout the week (Saturday and Sunday is different than Monday through Friday) and I think it would be beneficial to many tenants if it were to open earlier and close later. In the workout facility, there are: two (2) ellipticals, two (2) treadmills, one (1) stationary bike, free weights. There are also two televisions (though there are no remotes) and two gender-specific bathrooms that have showers. It can get a bit crowded in there sometimes, as this workout facility used to be the leasing office. (Cedar Heights used to be two separate apartment complexes, which is why there are two pools. The old office is what is the new workout facility.) Next on my list of rants is the upkeep and overall appearance of the complex. It's horrifying. I have lived in these apartments for years and plan to move within the next few months, and I can honestly say that anyone that makes the unfortunate decision to move in here NOW is totally missing what I had when I first moved in. If you notice when you first turn into the complex, the leasing office is very nice on the outside both the roof, with black shingles, and paint, a nice white, look very nice. This is false advertising. The buildings do not look like that. The buildings roofs are not even the same color as what you see when you look at the leasing office. All of the apartment buildings desperately need to be pressure-washed. Literally they are all green with dirt and mold on the outsides. The dumpsters are gross, half the time they are overflowing and it doesn't help any that they are in very conspicuous places. I drove up the hill to my apartment the other day and looked, REALLY looked, at the complex and was downright embarrassed. Parking is an absolute nightmare. I hope either all of your guests take the bus to your house, or that they don't have cars because literally LITERALLY every. SINGLE. parking space in the ENTIRE apartment complex is assigned. The *only* guest parking is a gravel parking lot (difficult to explain where it is, but it definitely does not look safe) and the leasing office parking (and you are required to move by 8AM or something like that so if your guests do stay the night, they better be up early enough to move their cars or they will be towed. And this is IF they are lucky enough to get one of those spaces.) The parking situation is not only a hassle for when you want to have guests over. It is also a hassle for tenants. I have seen it a thousand times Someone has a guest over, you're not home so the guest parks in your spot. Now, you get home and your parking spot is taken so...where do you park? You can't call management because they're closed. All you can do is leave a note on the person's car saying it is reserved, take down their license plate and call the office with it in the morning so IF it happens again, it will be towed. But for that night, you are screwed and have to park down in the gravel lot, or illegally park in a fire lane or something. Good luck with that (my advice is to pay the $25 to get a covered parking spot. I have one and have only had someone park in my spot once or twice, but my neighbors that have uncovered parking spots have it happen to them constantly.) There is no recycling AT ALL in this complex. Being eco-friendly, I find that quite bothersome because there are many people that WOULD recycle if bins were readily available to them, but don't have the time to go to a recycling area to do so. I think it really shows what kind of people management is, the fact that they care little for the environment that they would prefer everyone just throw away recyclable items instead of recycling them. Even McDonald's prints a "please recycle" on their paper bags. On to the perks of the apartment complex: The noise in the complex is minimal, it is a very quiet place to live 95% of the time. There are not many kids (though, for the kids that are here, there is no place for them to play so I would not recommend moving here if you have kids that enjoy being outdoors) and most tenants keep to themselves. I've always felt very safe as well I've walked home from the workout facility many times and though it is not lit very well, I've never had any problems. The insulation of the doors and windows in the apartments are satisfactory. Maintenance keeps the complex salted in the winter months, both the parking lots, walkways and stairs which is very nice as you wouldn't be able to get up the hills if it weren't. Speaking of maintenance, they are awesome and definitely the best part of this place. If you have a problem, you will get it fixed and you will get it fixed FAST. It is VERY close to 405 North and South, Evergreen Hospital, gas stations, fast food restaurants, and grocery stores. Overall, if you're in a rough spot and you need to move in somewhere cheap, this complex will do. But you get what you pay for. If you are looking for something long-term, or have a family, or are looking for something to call "home," I would not recommend this complex to you and advise you to look elsewhere.
