Resident 2014 - 2015

5/7/2015

This apartment featured mold, massive cat urine, fleas, and management who lied to us and behaved extremely poorly. They made me feel completely crazy. There were huge problems in my home, to the point where my family and I were physically sick, and every time I tried to fix them, I ended up feeling like a royal jerk. And we were stuck there because we couldn't afford to move again so soon. Apparently they couldn't keep this apartment rented. The neighbors said we were the 3rd residents in a year. So even though the policy was against fish tanks of any size, they told us it was no problem to bring our two 40 gallon reef tanks. This had been one of our main concerns in finding an apartment because these tanks were as special to us as a dog or cat would be, and they need special accommodation. This building turned out to have a major moisture problem already, according to a neighbor, and as we could see ourselves, so within 2 weeks, there was a ton of mold everywhere. There is no way that so much mold could have grown so fast, if it had not been there already. We found places on the ceiling where the paint had been touched up with a slightly different color, and spots of mold were growing through them. That means that they saw the mold and simply painted over it, instead of treating it properly. We have pictures of this. The management blamed us for the mold, which made us all very sick. Our cat got a lung infection, as did I, and it completely wiped out one of or reef tanks. That was devastating to us, emotionally and financially because to replace it costs thousands. That was just the mold. After a few days, when the carpet shampoo smell had worn off, it reeked of urine, which I told management, and they were SURE nothing could be wrong. They had me thinking I was crazy. When we finally left, I tore up the carpet and there were massive urine stains in the corners and along the wall. Most of the spots were under where our furniture had been, so it was not our cat. We have pictures of this too. Our cat and I were also getting bitten by fleas. I took him to the vet, who confirmed that there had been no prior infestation, which they can tell from the skin and coat, but that he had a lot of new bites. The assistant manager of the apartments told me first, that the apartment had new carpet, which she looked up and found was wrong, and then she told me that our cat probably already had fleas. We have a statement from the vet on that. The assistant manager was very unprofessional. She was like the dancing frog, she was horribly rude to me when no one else was there, and then acted all sweet and like I was threatening her, when she had a witness. I was always calm and reasonable, until I couldn't take it anymore and the panic would set in and then I would cry and run away. She was basically telling me I was making stuff up and harassing her. It felt like I was being held prisoner and being told I'm an -------. I didn't know what we were going to do. I am disabled, and my husband does the best he can to make ends meet. We spent all our money moving into this horrible place, so we couldn't really afford to take our cat to the vet, but he's important, and we certainly couldn't afford to move again, but we were all getting sicker, and management had nothing to offer but bandaids. We felt completely trapped, and there was nothing we could do about it. We couldn't find anyone to help us either. We had to borrow money, but we got out of that hole. We were there a month and a half. They absolutely refuse to show a unit until it's 100% ready for move-in. I think they want to cover up stuff you won't notice until you're all moved in, and they want to manipulate people into signing a lease without seeing the unit because "someone else is interested," so it might be gone later, which is what they told us. I think it's disgusting that this company can treat people like garbage and totally ruin their lives, and not have to worry at all about all the pictures we have, and the vet note, because they know we can't do anything about it. They don't seem to have any regulation, and they can just hide behind their expensive lawyers. We were completely powerless. This has taken a major toll on our ability to have a positive outlook on the world and people in general. I'm not really sure how we are going to recover from this. All I know is that everything happens for a reason, and this may have damaged us, but we are stronger for it. Life is about learning lessons, and this was a major one, but now I have new knowledge about how to interact with these kinds of people. No amount of honest, straight forward attitude you have can counteract their deep desire to cover their own ---, so they might be nice to your face, but they're lying through their teeth. I hope this helps others not make the same mistake, and it feels good to tell my story.

Hello Mary, I am so sorry that we let you down when you moved in and as I have said before, I am very sorry that we were unable to provide you with a home that could accommodate all of your family members; human, furry, and those with scales and gills. We pride ourselves on showing homes that are ready for move-in as a way of being able to show what a home will look like when someone makes it their own, and not when it looks as if someone has made the home well lived. Again, I am sorry for letting you down and for having you feel as if you were made to stay in a home that you were not happy in. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly as I do not want your experience here to be a reason you feel as if the world does not deserve a fair chance and a positive outlook.
