Having moved from an area in the state that had a lower cost of living, rent and how much your money can buy on the Kitsap Peninsula has been a shock. I can't say that Mariner's Glen is affordable; however it is more affordable than other apartment communities in this area. The apartments really vary in quality. I haven't seen a fully upgraded apartment, but the pictures do look nice. You will pay a premium for them, however. The units are in different stages of being upgraded, and that is a benefit- my apartment is partially upgraded, so it has some nicer features, but I don't have to pay the highest price for my size unit. That seems like a good way to go. The quality of the upgrades are pretty poor in my unit- although I have the wood grain linoleum in the kitchen and bathroom, I think it was laid right on top of the old flooring because there are lumps and swells on the floor. The cabinets are in terrible shape- they are just pressboard, and the bottoms of the lower cabinet doors are rough and busted up- one of my cabinet doors sits at a very crooked angle. The dishwasher doesn't quite fit in it's spot and is at a slight angle as well. It's not very powerful- I need to wash the dishes thoroughly by hand before I put them in the dishwasher. The mirror in the bathroom is chipped along the edges, and mold was definitely present. To be honest, I cried when I first saw it. However, now that my things are in place, those aesthetic blemishes don't bother me too much. There are definitely some nice perks. The walking trails within the community are really lovely, and it's close to miles of walking trails in the park across the street. Having a carport right outside your door is really nice and has been a godsend with the colder, snowier winter this year. You'll need to salt your own sidewalk, though, which seems very strange- they will supply buckets of salt in the winter, which is nice, but by in large, the sidewalks are treacherous when it's snowy or icy because you have to depend on neighbors in every building salting the walkways, which doesn't happen. It's really nice to be tucked back in the woods- there is a real sense of privacy. It's also nice that there are only 2 levels to each apartment building. The insulation in the walls is pretty good, but the units are by no means sound proof. The noise from the upstairs units are very loud- you can hear conversations, people going to the bathroom, and every footstep. My last apartment had much better insulation, so this was a really unpleasant surprise for me, but it may be a more standard experience for apartment living- I might not be the best judge. My experience with the office staff has been mixed. Some of them have been really sweet and a joy to get to know, but by in large, the managers are very unpleasant and dismissive. Overall, I have been very unhappy with my experience with them. Maintenance requests are handled promptly- I've been impressed! And they follow up to be sure everything is taken care of, which is awesome. Be aware that they require 60 days notice before vacating the apartment instead of 30; just something to take into consideration. I haven't taken full advantage of the amenities like the pools and work-out room, but they look nice. In the end, I will probably live at Mariners Glen for a while because it is less expensive than other communities in Port Orchard. Rent is just skyhigh in this area, so complexes can charge really high rent for poor quality apartments and stay competitive. If you can accept that, you want to spend a couple hundred less on living costs, and prefer to live in a complex that has some amenities, Mariners Glen could be a good fit. Just keep your expectations low.
