Resident 2009

6/6/2010

I lived here for four months in corporate housing at the end of 2009, and overall it is an excellent complex, but a bit pricey. Parking: Tons of parking, with lots of spaces that are easy to pull into. However, it sometimes takes a bit of driving around and going to the lower levels to find a good space. The parking garage is massive. I didn't mind it, but be prepared to spend 5 minutes leaving the garage. Also has paid parking, which is meant for the public, but could be beneficial if you have guests or just occasionally rent a car. Noise: I could hear my neighbours from my bathroom, but the rest of the apartment was fine. No problems with street noise. Fine by me. Grounds: Very nice grounds and common areas, although there should be a connection between the East and West towers that doesn't involve the street or parking garage (it's a little weird getting asked for change on my way to the exercise room). Safety: Felt safe enough, but you are smack in the middle of downtown (not a particularly bad area, and busy with people, although there are some sketchy characters around). The south towers aren't locked at all during the day, and the garage also has public access doors. The exercise room on the North towers is underground on a secluded floor, I never had any problems but I could see some people being a little scared to go there alone. Never actually had problems. Construction: Felt constructed well, no issues here. Biggest problem is the North Tower only has two elevators, which are inadequate for the main hours. Sometimes one is taken out of commission, so be prepared for a 10 minute elevator wait occasionally (this is really bad if you have a bus to catch: you have to leave 10 minutes early in case the elevators take forever). Halls and common areas are all clean and very nice. Maintenance: Never asked. Staff: Nice enough, but sometimes someone wasn't available to open North package room (usually not a problem). (my own criteria below) Amenities: Great! Three exercise rooms with modern equipment and TVs, a current pool, multiple hot tubs, nice little basketball court, etc. I just wish the saunas heated up better. Location: It's convenient to be right downtown, and to have the bus/light rail tunnels 2 blocks away. However, I prefer something a little less busy and a bit more out of the way (the Belltown area for example). You are close to Alaskan Way and plenty of bus routes, but I still prefer the Belltown area. Apartments: I really liked my apartment, well laid out with nice kitchen and bathrooms. Nice little deck with ocean view. Bedroom looked into other tower though, so terrible view from my bedroom. Overall: Overall, I like Harbor Steps. Very nice apartments and you get lots of amenities due to the large complex. It is pricey, but if you're willing to pay, definitely great apartments.
