Resident 2010 - 2011

Sad to Go

I recently graduated from the UW this June and I was sad to leave Husky Place. The management and office staff are great and trust me, good, competent management makes a world of a difference in apartment living. COST: I shared one of the larger studio units in Husky Place with a roommate, so rent was very reasonable ($360/month each). Anywhere you look in the U-District, rent is going to be overpriced and around $700-800 a month AT LEAST, so I don't understand the complaints about the rent. I'd say it wasn't worth the $85/month I paid. Yes, I felt secure leaving my car in the garage and I always had a spot to come home to, but some of the spots looked awkward to get in and out of and the matching scratches on the cars and structural columns testified to that. THE APARTMENTS: The larger unit I split with my roommate was small, but it fit two twin beds, a dresser, two nightstands, two bookcases, and a built-in desk - with a little planning of course. As an architecture student, I really appreciated the amount of natural lighting the rooms received as well. It was designed very well. I also really liked that the grounds and common areas were cleaned twice a week though, so any mess left by lazy tenants was taken care of eventually. The finish materials in the building looked cheap unfortunately, but the walls were well insulated compared to most. The room got very stuffy with two people living in it so we often had to keep the windows open day and night. I hated the communal kitchen. Everything was finished in white - white counters, white cabinets, white walls, white appliances, and even white floors. It was very sterile and I hated spending time in there. They could have at least paint the walls a different color like they did in Husky Court. NOISE: The complex itself was quiet. It was the street and surrounding frat houses that were noisy. With the windows closed though, the only noise I really heard was the occasional siren. With the windows open, the street noise can get loud, but this is Greek Row and to be expected. Personally I found it more entertaining than disruptive. I kind of miss it. My roommate and I asked for a room opposite from the frat house, north of the building, so we never had any problems in that respect. SECURITY: I felt really safe at night, despite living in the U-District, which is saying something. MANAGEMENT: The office staff/management were EXTREMELY helpful and professional. I say that because my roommate and I had a major problem with our room when we first moved in, but they took care of it right away and were very professional about it. My roommate and I are very grateful for it. They are not push overs, mind you, but if you treat them with respect and if you are a responsible adult, they will treat you like one. All in all, I had a good experience here and feel spoiled because of it.
