Resident 2000 - 2003

No Astro-turfing Here!

I'd love to believe that these recent positive reviews were sincere and unsolicited, but I doubt it. Obviously I lived here several years ago, but this has always stuck with me as one of the more unpleasant rental experiences that I've had. The studio itself was great. I loved the walk-in closet because it was big enough to put a bed and dresser in; I used the main area as a living space. The kitchen was well-equipped and bright. That's where the positives end, however. For an old, sturdy building, the noise really travels. I don't mean shouting and loud music, although there was plenty of both- just everyday life noises. Talking, coughing, other bodily functions... It was annoying because that's not the kind of noise you can complain about, but it was there nonetheless. I was young and inexperienced when I lived there or else I'd have known that it was not okay for them to come into my apartment when I wasn't home. Sometimes it was more innocuous, such as the manager placing a package inside my door or on my kitchen table. She meant well, but that's not okay! Other times the maintenance man would leave evidence of having been in there, but no note or prior notice. (I had area rugs that he would trip on and mess up the fringe- I lived alone with no pets, and I don't believe in poltergeists!) Oddly enough, he was never around when you actually needed him. The police were called to the building quite often for what I think were domestic disputes and drug/alcohol issues. Once, a guy jumped out of the window in the apartment above mine and took off running down the alley to escape the cops! I didn't really feel safe there after dark, which is a problem in the winter. The manager was nice but fairly incompetent. When I went to look at the place, I was quoted an amount for rent that ended up being incorrect- but she didn't tell me that until she'd already prepared the lease with the higher amount. Also, no prior mention of the "compushare"- the water, sewage and gas combined amount. So basically my rent was almost $100 a month more than what she told me it would be. I'd love to see a current review of this place that is honest and not coerced. I hate when property management cajoles fake reviews out of tenants (or, tries- the management at my most recent apartment building attempted that as well, and I declined.) Based on my experience and that of one other friend who has lived here in the interim, I can not recommend this as a good place to call home.
