Resident 2004

12/3/2004

I called the manager of The Virginian about renting a unit a few days after my previous apartment had burned down. He is an older man and has not been the manager there for that long. He understood what I was telling him about the Red Cross Disaster Aid (they would be paying for all move in fees, but it would take two weeks to get the check for him after moving in). He told me that he would have to run a credit check on the Red Cross as well as me, and I refused. He also told me that for proof of income, a paystub is not enough...he wanted to see my Federal Tax Statement as well. I told him no to this as well. There were many hoops to jump through, but I have lived there for almost 6 months now.

My previous apartment was almost twice the size, and about the same price on Capital Hill. They had allowed me to have my cat there as well. This apartment told me that there was a $450 non-refundable cat deposit (for a dog it was more expensive). When I moved in we walked through the apartment together to fill out the damages list. There were some scrapes and damages to the hardwood flooring, and he tol me not to worry about it. I put it on the list, along with many other "small" things as well.

In my experience, the building is nice for me since I don't drive and I work downtown. My issues have been with other tenants (coming home drunk and thinking my apartment is theirs so they try to bash the door in, or the woman next door who was prone to violent hallucinations). There are some questionable fees upon moving in ($350 non-refundable move-in fee to cover painting, floor polishing, etc.-things that the previous tenants deposit should have covered), but the Red Cross had no problem paying for them.

My window edges were painted over so I had to scrape them to open it. My kitchen is laid out so that I have to open my refridgerator door to open the oven (seriously--no joke--there is not enough room in the kitchen to open one without the other). The floors are the "original floors" which means that if someone walks upstairs and across the building my window rattles. The heating system is ancient ("classic") and when the pipes heat up they make a sound that sounds like someone is coming for me with a baseball bat against the pipes. My door was replaced before I moved in, so all it has is a doorknob with a lock--no deadbolt, no peephole (other doors have both).

Upon moving out, I was charged for blind cleaning and floor cleaning, even though I already had those things done--the blinds being done professionally. The company charges $150 for move-IN cleaning fees to take care of this, yet I was charged out of my security deposit. I was told by the manager upon doing the final walkthrough that I would be charged 15 minutes labor for scrubbing the bath tub, and 15 minutes labor for cleaning the broiler pan (even though I had never used it...it was stuck and would only come out if you yanked really hard on it). Over $150 was taken out of my deposit for these two things alone.

This has been over a month, and the company still hasn't responded to my inquiries for a detailed breakdown of the charges they took from my deposit.
