Resident 2007 - 2009

1/15/2009

I currently live at Seminole Woods but I am excited to leave once my lease comes up. We lived in two apartments in this complex across the street from each other. The first was a loft with no shade to block out sunlight for those early sunny mornings and obvious water damage surrounded the skylight. My biggest concern was not noticed until after we moved in though when I could actually pick up the carpeting and padding from the floor and pull it away from the wall exposing the concrete floor. Large strands of carpeting were vacuumed up and cut away from the beater bar. There was also no lighting in the loft bedroom area. We had to buy 3 lamps to light the space. Once our toilet was leaking onto the floor, when I called the office to get maintenance to take care of it the manager (who has left for another JSM property, see Midtown Terrace) told me it could wait until the next day. Well I only have one toilet! If that one goes, I don't go! (There is no community bathroom at this complex.) She said I would have to call the emergency number (she didn't offer to call) and someone did take care of it but I had to wait over 4 hours for him to arrive. These two concerns prompted us to look for a ranch style apartment which was available across the street but the manager wanted us to move two months early. We said we would, but when the time came she wasn't prepared. She didn't have the lease drawn up, numerous things needed to be fixed in this new apartment (despite me mentioning), she didn't have the correct keys for the apartment or storage unit, and she gave us the wrong garage opener. As these concerns came up I walked over to the office to find no one for days! In our new place the breakfast bar is basically is wasted space because if you put stools there it blocks the hallway. When we started to unpack we started to notice those repairs I mentioned to her somehow were forgotten (probably because she was never in her office). There are several holes in the walls and ceilings around fixtures and switches. She told me the carpeting by our front door was to be replaced because it was dingy, torn, and smelled of cat (though she denies the previous tenants have cats). We were without a battery in our smoke detector for over 3 months after we moved in. The main entrance door has not latched properly for 6 months. We were suppose to have a washer and dryer in unit but were missing the washer. She then gave me someone else's parking spot. (I, of course, didn't find out about it until the owner of the spot left nasty messages on my car.) The cracks around our windows were not filled in until I went to Home Depot and filled them in myself. New tenants recently moved in above us who tried to steal my parking (again nasty notes left on my car) and are extremely loud (The building itself is actually quiet.) I had to call the police on them at 12:30 on a Wednesday because they were pounding, verbally fighting, and swearing. When I called the apartment manager to warn him, he told me the police were called twice to my building in the same evening. The new manager (whom was the manager when we signed our first lease is more responsive). He gets to know his tenants, but I know he manages other JSM Properties so he is not always around. The only reason I would stay is if I had a dog because it is close to the park (not a dog park though) and they recently started accepting dogs in our building (September 2008). Though no one cleans up after their dogs.
