Resident 2005 - 2006

5/31/2008

My roommate and I rented a 2 bedroom apartment at Norris Court and loved it! The apartments vary greatly though - which you can see by the reviews. There are no kids around and most residents are grad students. Our apartment consisted of a kitchen, two bedrooms, a living/dining room, bathroom, a study, and a sunroom. Transportation. Norris Court is in a very good location for UW students and staff. Not only does the #28 run every 7.5 minutes from the corner straight to the UW during the morning peak, but the UW 81 (Free) Safe Route runs until the wee hours of the morning - dropping off at the corner during the academic year. Biking to and from campus is also a direct shot with bike lanes all the way to campus along E. Gorham/Johnson. It can be a hassle to have a car in this neighborhood though - especially in the winter when you need to rotate sides of the street and your car is covered in 2 feet of snow. Argh. Value. I looked at over 20 apartments before settling at Norris Court. Most comparably priced 2 bedrooms in the area are awful, Norris Court was a pleasant surprise. Utilities minus electricity are included as well. You can park for free on the street, but as stated previously - it can be a pain. We also had our own storage room in the basement which was huge - at least 800 square feet of space. This was very handy for bikes and other stuff...not all units have this though. We paid $950 a month for our apartment and got the whole security deposit back at the end. Apartment Construction/Fixtures. Most apartments have very nice wood floors with some tile thrown in where the wood hasn't stood up (bathroom/kitchen). We had a total of 9 closets in our apartment and while our individual bedroom closets weren't huge - there were 7 others to use! We also had a total of 20 windows, which meant great airflow in the summer and lots of natural light. Most apartments have working wood burning fire places and built in bookshelves. We had a french door that connected the living room to our study and sunroom. Our bathroom was a little dated, but we did have a linen closet and a clawfoot tub. The kitchen was my least favorite room. I am not sure that they were constructed to handle refrigerators, in most apartments the fridge is wedged and you loose the utility of a built-in pantry. The kitchens are small, have mini appliances and our sink was dreadful - think mop bucket sink but 3 feet off the floor. We did have plenty of cupboards even when counter space was lacking. Another big complaint is the noise. The buildings are old and you can hear your neighbors. If you have party animal neighbors, beware. Also, our apartment was ridiculously warm in the winter and we usually kept a window or two cracked. You have no control over the heat. Management. John and maintenance were always super responsive to all our requests...perhaps because we paid our rent on time? Everything was fixed within 24 hours and sometimes within minutes of calling. John's a little quirky, but overall a great manager and friendly. Neighborhood Amenities. This is a great neighborhood with a great little local convenience store, pizza place, coffee house, liquor store, sandwich shop, Aveda salon and other great stores like Burnie's Rock shop. Most stores are locally owned and you're a quick bike ride away from the Cap City trail and the Willy Street neighborhood. You are within a block of two great parks (Reynold's and Giddings on the Lake) and a little over a mile from State Street. I would definitely recommend these apartments to folks, but come check them out for yourself. Not all units are the same and they certainly don't have amenities of a newer building.
