Resident 2009 - 2011

4/4/2011

We lived here from Jan 2009 through April 2011. My wife and I looked everywhere as I had a job relocation and we visited over a dozen apartment complexes ranging from 800-1300 in the Milwaukee market. Ironically we are moving again and so we are leaving at the end of the month. First off this is a partizan review as my wife and I loved it here. We loved the staff, loved the neighborhood and loved the apartment we were in. It was a 2bed 2bath with a den and double garage overlooking the pond/lake in the back. We had loads of room, a great lay out and to be fair to have the double garage was massive in a state where 50-100" of snow in the winter and sub zero temps are common. As I said we went to many places and my wife's heart was set on the third ward area of downtown at first. When we priced it out with the lack of parking, storage and cost of living we were savings 300-500 bucks a month at the Highlands with a 2 car garage, 1300 square feet and everything we needed within 15 mins drive. It was a no brainer and a smarter choice. Also you can get into an apartment for less (less size, one car garage) for $1000-1200 but the layout and lack of storage was evident. The Highlands was quieter, more space and has good amenities like the pool, hot tub and fitness center along with WIFI at pool and clubhouse. They also offer you mail and package drop off at the office should you not be in and dry cleaning service. We had a larger apartment. But kept our utilities averaging about $130-150. About $60-70 in the summer and no more than $200 in the winter. For 1300 square feet that is not bad. I would go in for a coffee at the coffee bar in the club house often and say hello to the staff who are always willing to chat about how things are going. Most of the reviews I have read on here talk about trivial issues that are not the apartment complex fault. You should always know what you are signing and always do your homework on a place before you sign. Most of the negativity is due to thier lack of personal responsibility. My wife and I plus several of the neighbours we have come to know all love being at the Highlands. It is lastly, very easy to get to Chicago (just over an hour), Madison (just over an hour) and to get to Brookfield & Downtown is about 15-20 mins. There are fitness clubs in the area, Whitnall park, bars and places to eat abound and coffee houses. It is a great place to live. I recommend that you come and check it out and you'll see this place is a nice place to live if you are looking to rent for a wee while.
